Pastoral Care in Junior Phase: Helping Every Child to Belong, Believe and Be Themselves

Pastoral Care in Junior Phase: Helping Every Child to Belong, Believe and Be Themselves - Pastoral Care in Junior Phase

At The British School of Kuwait, we believe that happy, safe and supported children are best placed to thrive. Across Junior Phase, pastoral care is not simply something we provide when a child needs additional help; it is part of everyday school life and plays an important role in creating a community where every student feels known, valued and that they belong.

Our approach begins with knowing every child. “One Page Profiles” give our students a voice, helping teachers understand what is important to them, what they enjoy, what they may find difficult and how we can best support them. Alongside regular Pupil Progress Meetings, this ensures that we look beyond academic attainment and consider the whole child – their wellbeing, relationships, strengths, needs and experiences in school.

Student voice is at the heart of our wellbeing provision. Through Komodo Wellbeing, students regularly have the opportunity to tell us how they are feeling and reflect on areas including friendships, confidence, belonging, learning and emotional wellbeing. This provides our staff with valuable insight and, importantly, gives children a simple way to request a conversation with a trusted adult when they need one.

Wellbeing is also something we actively teach and celebrate. Our Wellbeing Champions give students the opportunity to become positive role models within their classes, promoting kindness, inclusion and belonging. Throughout the year, whole-phase initiatives explore themes such as resilience, healthy lifestyles and positive relationships. Our Mindful Moments also provide opportunities during the school day for children to pause, breathe, reset and develop strategies for managing their emotions.

Sometimes children need a little more. The Den, our dedicated Junior Phase wellbeing space, provides a calm and welcoming environment where students can regulate, talk with a trusted adult and access additional pastoral support. Our Wellbeing and Behaviour Leads work alongside teachers, Year Heads and the Junior Phase Leadership Team to provide support across classrooms and breaktimes. Targeted initiatives, including Kind Hands Club and Calm and Connect sessions, allow us to respond to individual needs in a supportive and purposeful way.

Safeguarding remains at the centre of everything we do. Through strong relationships with our students, close communication with families and collaboration between staff, we aim to identify concerns early and ensure children receive the right support at the right time.

Ultimately, our pastoral provision is about creating a culture in which children know that there is always someone ready to listen, celebrate their successes and support them through challenges. We want every student who walks through Junior Phase to feel safe, happy and proud to be part of our community.

Because every child deserves the opportunity to belong, believe, and be you.
