Victorian Day 2024

During Term 2, Year 5 students immersed themselves in learning about life during the Victorian era, exploring what daily life was like under the reign of Queen Victoria. On December 12th, they had the opportunity to step back in time and experience a Victorian school day, complete with dunce caps and all!

The day began with the children gathered outside, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their Victorian teachers, accompanied by the strict and stern headmaster, Mr. James. Dressed in traditional black clothing, the teachers carried thin wooden canes—a symbol of discipline used during the era. (Don’t worry, no one was actually caned!) Mr. James welcomed the students in the courtyard, reading them a humorous poem about what they could expect throughout the day. A higher-phase guest, who took on the role of assistant headmaster, also had a chance to quiz the teachers on Victorian-era knowledge.

Inside the classrooms, the students were fully immersed in the harsh and disciplined world of a Victorian school. They quickly learned that answering questions incorrectly could lead to punishment, including the infamous dunce hat! Lessons followed a strict Victorian routine, with students reciting times tables, copying work from the blackboard, and practicing handwriting with chalk. Poetry recitation was also a key part of the curriculum. The atmosphere was stern, and Mr. James made surprise visits to deliver additional reprimands, adding to the authenticity of the experience.

In the afternoon, students had the chance to enjoy some of the more enjoyable aspects of Victorian life. Some classes tried their hand at making gruel, a staple food for poor Victorian children. Others embraced their creativity with cross-stitching, creating beautiful textile pieces to take home. In another room, students made peg dolls, a popular toy during Victorian times. To wrap up the day, students watched episodes of Horrible Histories, which provided fun and fascinating facts about life in Victorian Britain.

Overall, the day was a huge success, offering the children a unique and immersive experience of Victorian childhood. They had the chance to try activities that they wouldn’t usually encounter in their everyday lessons. While they had a great time, it’s safe to say that the children were relieved not to have to endure such strict discipline every day!
