VLE
As Kuwait's leading school, The British School of Kuwait (BSK) demands the highest standards of professionalism from its staff. BSK is an exciting environment in which to build a career in teaching. The quality of students, teachers and resources, combined with progressive curriculum planning, extensive extracurricular activities and continuing professional development, provide opportunities that very few schools can match.
All colleagues at BSK are adventurous, capable and ambitious. The average length of stay for teachers at BSK has been increasing in recent times and is currently close to five years. Nevertheless, opportunities arise frequently for colleagues to apply for positions of extra responsibility.
BSK is committed to the continuing professional development (CPD) of its staff. CPD is essential as part of the induction process at BSK. For example, eLearning through interactive whiteboards (IWB), the virtual learning environment (VLE) and the content management system of the website requires training in the technical aspects as well as the corporate identity of the school. Initiatives such as assessment for learning (A4L) as well as subject and task-specific skill acquisition also require access to CPD.
The main source of expertise in relation to CPD is found within the staff at BSK. Dedicated training sessions and ‘teacher learning communities’ ensure that ideas, good practice and skills are shared. Regularly, overseas expertise is required with examples including Assessment for Learning strategies (Karen Ardley Associates); the SIMS information management system (Capita) and school self-evaluation (PENTA International). Occasionally, it is more efficient to send colleagues on specific courses overseas. Whichever method of CPD best meets the development needs of BSK, funding is made available.
