The Shakespeare Theatre on the BSK campus was a hive of excitement and expectation as Aladdin Jr the Musical was performed and crewed by students for parents and guests. The story of Aladdin is one of the most familiar narratives in all of literature, a classic ‘rags to riches’ tale featuring the young hero ‘Aladdin’, who has to learn an important lesson; a beautiful heroine Jasmine, a captivating Genie, a flying carpet (though wordless charmed the audience with movement and dance) and of course the evil villain, Jafar.
BSK’s colourful interpretation of ‘Aladdin Jr’ was exceptional, the performance had a good healthy dose of humour, music and song, it showcased talented students; some of whom were taking to the stage for the first time. The cast’s commitment to character made the performance not only believable but enthralling. The audience was also entranced by comic timing, live music and vibrant dance numbers all of which ensured that the tale of Aladdin was thoroughly enjoyed. In addition, the striking costumes and set design were well captured and sympathetic of the era, offering audiences an awe-inspiring atmosphere that transported them back to the deserts of the ‘Arabian Nights’.
Congratulations to the team and cast of Aladdin Jr. A very enjoyable experience, we wait in anticipation for BSK’s forthcoming productions.
