VLE
School uniform makes an essential contribution to the development of community spirit and pride that all students feel by being a part of The British School of Kuwait. Uniform specifications are at the links below:
Correct school uniform must be worn both at school and when engaged in off-campus school activities. The only exceptions are certain field trips and creative arts or sporting activities for which school uniform would be unsuitable. Such instances are agreed between the activity organiser and the Head Teacher.
Students’ personal appearance is just as important as the uniform they wear. A smart personal appearance helps focus students on their work and thereby supports learning.
Skirts
Girls’ skirts and shorts must be at least knee length and must not be altered in any way without the written permission of their Department Coordinator.
Trousers
Boys’ trousers must be worn on the waist, not the hip. Alterations to boys’ trousers, except for the length of the leg, require the written permission of their Department Coordinator.
Blouses
Where girls’ blouses are worn outside of skirts, the bottom edge of the blouse must be tailored, not straight cut. If a vest is worn under the blouse, it must be tucked securely into the skirt, so that it cannot be seen.
Shirts
Boys’ shirts must be tucked securely into their trousers at all times. The top buttons of shirts and blouses must be fastened, and tie knots should cover the top button. Long-sleeved shirts must be buttoned at the cuff. Shirts must not be altered in any way without the written permission of the Department Coordinator. If a vest or other garment is worn under the shirt, it must not be visible through the shirt, at the neck or at the sleeves.
Shoes
School shoes should be of a formal black leather style (not patent or suede) with a very low heel and black soles. Shoes with sports-style soles or stitching, platform soles or high heels may not be worn. Shoes should be kept well polished. Hair
Students may not have hair which is too short: less than a ‘number three’ cut, which is 9 millimetres in length. Boys may not have hair which is too long: covering their eyebrows or below the top of their shirt collar.
Boys may not have facial hair or noticeable stubble, except that they may wear a neatly trimmed moustache. Sideburns should be short and natural in appearance, not unduly styled.
Girls with long hair must use a hair band or other hair accessory to keep their hair back, behind their shoulders. Hair accessories may only be plain purple or black.
Students may not dye or highlight their hair.
Students may not use hair gel, mousse, cream or oil to the extent that it is noticeable.
Students may not have unruly, unnatural or eccentric hairstyles. In particular, hair may not be cut or shaped into mohawk, fauxhawk, quiff or rattail styles. Lines or shapes may not be shaved into hair or eyebrows.
Any student who cuts his or her hair too short or into an inappropriate style will be sanctioned and must buy and wear a BSK cap until such time as the situation can be corrected. However, any Muslim student who has their hair shaved when performing Umra will not be sanctioned or required to wear a cap.
Jewellery
Students may not wear any jewellery or accessories, the only exceptions being wristwatches and that girls may wear one very small, plain gold or silver stud in the lobe of each ear. No other piercings are acceptable.
Cosmetics
Students may not use cosmetic products, including facial makeup, lipstick/gloss/coloured balm and nail varnish.
Sikh Students
Sikh students may wear a kara and a grey turban of modest proportions. Sikh students may carry only a small symbolic kirpan which is incapable of causing injury.
Smart Clothing
Worn out, frayed, crumpled, dirty or stained items of clothing should not be worn.
Identification Badges
Although not shown on the photographs of uniform in the Middle, Upper and Sixth Form Departments, all students must wear their BSK ID badges. The printed card, its holder and the lanyard are issued free of charge at the beginning of the school year but remain the property of The British School of Kuwait. The ID badge must not be altered, defaced or accessorised in any way. Any student who loses or damages their ID badge must approach their Department Coordinator immediately, so that it may be replaced quickly.
This Uniform Policy has been agreed by the Senior Management Team and is enforced by the Head Teacher and Secondary Leadership Team. The wearing of correct school uniform and adherence to these standards are closely monitored by all tutors and teachers, who apply sanctions in the event of any and all policy breaches. In the event of any dispute about the application of these standards, the Principal will be the final arbiter.
