One of the biggest moments for parents and children is the first day at school in Reception. We have special programmes to assist with this transition and the work starts well before September of a new year. Information sessions are held for parents at The Sunshine Kindergarten and tours of The British School of Kuwait Reception facilities are provided for both prospective parents and their children. In this way expectations and relationships are established well before the year even begins.
Primary students play apart, with separate spaces reserved for each Year Group, but the young ones are well respected by older children on the odd occasions when they come into contact, such as at the beginning and end of the school day. Playgrounds are well supervised with multiple staff at any one time and although accidents and incidents will sometimes occur with active, confident children, our teaching and clinic staff are well trained in sorting out any problems.
We institute a carefully planned pastoral programme to aid transition from one Year Group to the next, with assemblies visited by students from the Year Group above each May to talk about their experiences and answer questions the younger Year Group may have. As they share their thoughts and take on the role of mentor, we aim also to build the leadership capacity and empathy of even our youngest students.
Secondary colleagues are on hand to speak with Year 5 students at the end of each year to ease the transition into the Middle Department. In Terms 4 and 5, Year 5 tutors also introduce elements of Secondary pastoral practice to prepare students for the independence expected of Year 6 and the Middle Department.
