VLE
Subject teams are responsible for the subject components of the academic curriculum from Reception to Year 13. Each subject team is led by a Subject Coordinator or – for Music and Sport – a Director.
The following two subject groupings are also overseen by a Subject Chair.
A Senior Teacher coordinates the development of eLearning across every subject and year group.
Miss Stephanie Hodgins BEd(Hons) MAPrimary English Coordinator
Stephanie graduated from Queen's University, Belfast with a first class honours degree in Education with English. She then went on to read for a Master of Arts in Postcolonial Literature at The University of York. Stephanie joined the Year 5 teaching team at BSK in 2009, and was appointed to the post of Primary English Coordinator in 2012. In her spare time Stephanie enjoys playing piano and violin, fishing, kayaking and reading.

Mr David Howarth BA(Hons) PGCESecondary English Coordinator
David graduated in English and then completed his teacher training at Leeds University. He worked for Wigan Council for three years before moving in 1999 to The British School of Gran Canaria, where he was the Key Skills Coordinator and then PSHE Coordinator. David joined BSK in 2002, serving as Assistant English Coordinator and as Records and Reports Coordinator before being appointed as Secondary English Coordinator in 2012. David's personal interests include reading, watching movies and travelling.

Mr Brendan Burns BSc PGCEMathematics Coordinator
Brendan graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy from the University of Manchester. He subsequently went on to gain a PGCE from Liverpool Hope University College. Brendan taught in the UK as a Mathematics teacher for three years. In his spare time Brendan enjoys playing team sports such as football, rugby and squash. He also enjoys travelling and cooking.

Miss Kari Satre BMus(MusEd), BEdPrimary Science Coordinator
Kari graduated with a double degree in Music and Education in 2006 from the University of Saskatchewan. She taught in Thailand for two years before moving to Kuwait, and joined BSK in 2010 as a Year 4 teacher. Kari was appointed as Primary Science Coordinator in 2011. Her personal interests include running, travelling, knitting and reading.

Dr David Williams BSc(Hons) PhD PGCESecondary Biology Coordinator
David studied Biochemistry at the University of Glasgow before obtaining a PhD for his research on hepatitis B virus. He then carried out further research at the University of Dundee into cell signalling and the development of cancer and has published several research articles from this work. He has been teaching Biology at BSK since 2005 and is the current Subject Coordinator of Biology. His interests include cycling, hill-walking, swimming and improving his Arabic, which he studied for two years in Oman.

Mr Nick Allen BA(Hons) BEd QTS MSc AGSMSecondary Physics Coordinator
Nick graduated in Maritime Defence with first class honours whilst serving in the Royal Navy. He later took a bachelors degree in Science and an MSc in Astrophysics at the University of London. Nick is an Associate of the Guildhall School of Music in guitar performance and teaching. He has taught in a wide variety of schools and colleges in the UK, and his interests include astronomy, mathematics and music.

Emma graduated in Marine Chemistry from the University of Wales and initially worked in industry, as an Environmental Chemistry Technician and then as a Chemistry Instrumental Analyst. Deciding to pursue a career in teaching she then completed a Secondary Science teaching qualification at Edge Hill University College. Emma has taught all three scientific disciplines in the UK. She moved to Kuwait in 2008. Emma’s personal interests include travel, outdoor pursuits and horse riding.

Mr Jonathan Storer BEd(Hons)Senior Teacher (Reports)Chair of HumanitiesHistory Coordinator
Jonathan graduated in Education and obtained his teaching qualification from the University of Exeter. After seven years teaching History and Physical Education in London, he moved to Kuwait in 2002. Jonathan is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Military History. His personal interests include British politics, the role of the Special Operations Executive during World War II and the military emergence of Prussia as a European power during the 19th Century.

Mr Oliver Millar BSc(Hons) PGCEGeography CoordinatorInternational Award CoordinatorField Studies Coordinator
Oliver graduated with an Honours Geography degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in 2001. He has taught in the United Kingdom, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Oliver is currently Geography, International Award Coordinator and Field Studies Coordinator. He enjoys travelling and a variety of outdoor pursuits.

Mr Howard Jones BA(Hons) PGCESocial Studies Coordinator
Howard graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 1997, having read International Business Studies and German. The following year, he was awarded his teaching qualification from Lancaster University. After ten years in Britain teaching and leading a subject department, Howard moved to Kuwait in 2009 and joined The British School of Kuwait. His personal interests include investment strategies, music, playing the clarinet and travelling.

Mr John Talbot BEd(Hons)Chair of Creative ArtsDirector of Curriculum Music
John graduated from Cambridge University in 1998. He taught in Britain for two years before relocating to the Gulf – originally to St Christopher’s School in Bahrain. John arrived at BSK in 2003. He is a keen double bass player and has an eclectic musical taste. In his spare time, John enjoys travelling and developing his clarinet and French horn playing.

Dr Dan Marsh BSc(Hons) PhDArt, Design and Technology Coordinator
Dan is an expert in optics, has a passion for photography and enjoys capturing the play of light in freer mediums such as pencil or acrylics. After his PhD, Dan spent three years at the University of Bristol studying textiles, fibres and plastics. Dan’s deep understanding of the fundamental nature of light and its interaction with surfaces and pigments is invaluable to him in his art. He feels strongly that art and science are highly complimentary. Dan travels widely, usually with camera in hand. He is a keen amateur dramatist with an eye for set design. He plays guitar and will sing if no one is listening!

Mr David Allcock CertEd PGCEDrama Coordinator
David, following a family tradition that goes back a long way, has been involved with the theatre for as long as he remembers – a long time! He has taught Drama in every school in which he has worked and still, in – as he puts it – the twilight of a long career, enjoys the thrill of introducing young people to the joys of performing. His major interest outside the theatre is the renovation of his family home in southern France.

Miss Suzanne Davey BEd(Hons)Business Subjects Coordinator
Suzanne began her career in the commercial banking sector in London before moving on to teach Business Subjects. She taught for ten years in the United Kingdom and was Head of Faculty in a school in London before coming to Kuwait. Suzanne’s personal interests include scuba diving and travelling.

Mr John Leonard BSc(Hons) PGCESenior Teacher (eLearning)ICT Coordinator
John graduated with Honours before moving on to Leicester University to complete his PGCE. After teaching in London he moved to Riyadh for two years before moving to The British School of Kuwait. Since that time he has filled a variety of roles and he is the currently Senior Teacher with responsibility for eLearning across the whole school. John’s interests include scuba diving, travel photography, building computers, tinkering with websites and Linux.

Mr Peter Martin MA(Hons) (Oxon) PGCEForeign Languages Coordinator
Peter obtained his Masters in French and German from Oxford University and went on to gain a PGCE in Languages and Music from Nottingham University. After working as Head of German at Rydens School, Walton-on-Thames from 1983-89, he spent five years as Coordinator of Music at Hebron School, Ooty. Peter joined BSK in 1996 as the SCC of Modern Foreign Languages. Having grown up in India, Peter is fluent in Tamil. His general interests include classical music, history, geography, and Indian culture and current affairs.

Mr John Porteous BEd(Hons)Director of Sport
John graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Exeter (University College Plymouth St Mark & St John) in 1995. He has an extensive knowledge of sport sciences, having spent eleven years lecturing for the University of Bath on their vocational undergraduate sport programmes. His particular areas of expertise are biomechanics, nutrition and study skills. John has also led PE teaching teams in Qatar and Kenya. His personal interests include travel, cooking and all things related to sport – especially rugby.

Mr Ahmed Al-Adawi BA HDipArabic Coordinator (First Language)
Ahmed graduated from the Faculty of Arts, Department of Arabic Literature at Mansoura University, Egypt. He also has a Higher Diploma in Education and Curriculum. Ahmed taught Arabic language in Egypt for five years and has spent nineteen years in Kuwait teaching both Arabic and Islamic Studies. In his spare time Ahmed enjoys reading and watching old movies.

Mr Mohamed Al-Yousef BAIslamic Studies Coordinator
Mohamed graduated in 1990 with a BA degree in Islamic Studies and Qur’anic Recitation from Damascus University. He taught in Syria for three years and then worked at the Islamic Awqaf Ministry in its Encyclopaedia Branch. Mohamed joined The British School of Kuwait in 1994 and was appointed Islamic Studies Coordinator in 1998. He was nominated for Qur’anic recitation competitions as a member of the Ministry of Public Government Examination Committee from 1995-2001. In his spare time Mohamed enjoys reading and sports.
