In another ground breaking move The British School of Kuwait has recently established Q Garden, a delightful outdoor classroom space designed expressly to meet the requirements of the English National Curriculum. Opened by Mrs Maria Baker, wife of HE the British Ambassador, the garden features carefully constructed habitats designed to encourage local and migratory wildlife such as butterflies, stag and scarab beetles, dragonflies, geckos and dhubs.
One such habitat has been built from a frame of salvaged packing pallets, wood cut from a dead tree with holes drilled in the pieces for wildlife homes, with seed pods, matting and wood from cleaned palm trees adding a further variety of materials and textures. Old pipes stuffed with sticks, discarded tiles and wicker from old furniture rounds off what is art as much as science!
Children in Kuwait have few opportunities to experience natural environments of this nature and Q Garden’s habitats will go some way to providing those missing experiences for children at The British School of Kuwait. The garden will also provide opportunities for leadership and responsibility as the Green Team Eco Warriors club will maintain the space and all classes will play a role in the establishment of the vegetable plot. At times part of the garden will become an archaeological dig, a natural science laboratory and at other times an outdoor still life drawing studio.
By constructing this habitat from recycled materials the school also intends to raise awareness amongst children regarding conservation of flora and fauna, as well as complementing our creative curriculum and encouraging active learning. Already teachers and students are flocking to the space and BSK looks forward to many years of enjoyment in its newest and sunniest classroom.
