Directed by Mr Gary Ruston, the BSK wind band was established in 2009 and aims to attract young students’ interest and also develop their first skills of playing together. The band’s repertoire varies from light classic to easy jazz standard pieces. All arrangements are specifically directed to meet students’ early needs of ensemble/orchestral experience. Rehearsal times: Sunday 14.45-15.30.
Directed by Miss Galina Bojhilova, the BSK String Orchestra was established in with the aim of attracting young string players to develop their first ensemble skills. The orchestra has a varied repertoire of classical and modern music in order to cater for all tastes. It is attended by all string players of ABRSM Grade 1 standard and above. Rehearsal times: Sunday 14.45-15.30.
Mr Philip Smith leads the BSK Concert Orchestra. With both string and woodwind sections, the Concert Orchestra offers more advanced students across the school a wide repertoire of classical and modern music. The Concert Orchestra is often called upon to perform on behalf of the school and takes part in many prestigious events across Kuwait. Rehearsal times: Sunday 15.30-16.30.
La Camerata is the most prestigious of all the musical ensembles at BSK. It is a chamber string ensemble directed by Ms Galina Bojilova. Its repertoire consists entirely of classical string ensemble works. La Camerata has won the ensemble section of Young Musicians of the Gulf four times. Acceptance into La Camerata is by invitation only and students are expected to be of a minimum Grade 6 ABRSM standard. Rehearsal times: Wednesday 14.45-16.00.
BSK sees singing as an integral and highly important musical skill. We organise an array of choral groups to cater for individual tastes in music, ability level and also to work towards specific performances.
The Young Musicians of the Gulf Competition takes place every February in Bahrain and is a highly prestigious international competition. The British School of Kuwait has achieved much success in the competition, winning ten major trophies in the past five years. These have included Feixue Li (overall winner Young Musician of the Gulf 2009) Shahin Khodei (overall 2nd placed 2008) and La Camerata (Best Ensemble 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). In 2013, Hai Wei Li was declared the Most Promising Musician under 15 years of age.
The Young Musicians of the Gulf Competition represents the highest field of excellence in Music across the Gulf and we are delighted that BSK musicians feature so strongly in its achievement list.
