VLE
It is with pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to all to the Lower Department (LD) at The British School of Kuwait. LD comprises Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and provides the foundation for all schooling that comes after this vital period in the learning process for young minds.
In the Lower Department we provide a caring, safe learning environment where children feel comfortable and able to succeed. Students are stimulated, challenged and exposed to a myriad of new ideas and concepts. All their senses are engaged as we strive to bring out the best, whilst remaining sensitive to individual needs and circumstances. We forge strong social bonds and encourage children to learn from each other whilst respecting differences. Confidence is built and children are encouraged to take greater control of their own learning.
All this is delivered through a rich, varied and rigorous curriculum delivered by specialists in the field of developing young minds. The building blocks for future success are laid and parents are actively encouraged to share this journey with us.
The core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science are complemented by ICT, History, Geography and Art. In addition to this Music and PE are taught by specialised teachers and for our Arabic students we have sessions where they study their own language and Islam. Non-Arab students benefit from time spent in our Design and Technology area, where specialist teachers help them make models with moving parts and design all types of exciting and wonderful things.
Our teaching and learning is fast paced and thorough with many themed weeks that help bring real world relevance to our curriculum and help to embed learning. These themed weeks, which integrate skills and knowledge across subject areas, include Health Week, Science Week, International Week, Book Week, History Week and Art Week.
An integral part of our work in LD is the celebration of successes regardless of how big or small they are. Every day I share with children the joys of achievement, whether it be remembering a full stop or completing their first story. Our children are encouraged to take the positives from moments of struggle and thus taught resilience, perseverance and how to succeed.
We gather each week in Assembly to share these successes and every class will host an assembly in order to proudly showcase their talents. This provides an opportunity for mums and dads to come into school and enjoy a taste of school life.
I am proud to represent the Lower Department and relish my daily interaction with our children. I look forward to the opportunity of meeting you.
