The BSK debating society has claimed much success at international competitions. Every year, we travel to at least one international competition and in the past these have included: The Cambridge University Schools Debate, Debate Dubai and BSME tournaments. During these, our students compete against other GCC countries, including Dubai, Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. In recent years, both junior and senior teams have been victorious, coming home as finalists, semi-finalists and quarter-finalists; many of these as first time debaters.
Alongside this, a select number of students across Kuwait are chosen annually to represent Team Kuwait at the prestigious World Schools Debating Championship; our students have formed a part of these teams every year and this offers much promise to their future academic and personal social education. In the past, our students have travelled to South Africa, Turkey, Thailand and Singapore amongst others. Here they have acted as ambassadors of Kuwait, interacting with and immersing themselves into a vast array of different cultures.
Keen to develop new skills and take on new opposition, this year a team of upper department and sixth form students will be travelling to Slovakia to take part in the Bratislava Schools Debating Competition and so this is a main focus area with the club at present.
Whilst external competitions have demonstrated much success, our students don’t stop there. Inter-house debates and Student Teacher debates are popular within BSK. In February, the debating society will go head to head to argue against IGCSE PE students, to help further enhance their understanding and knowledge of necessary examination sport science related topics.
Debating Club is for Year 8-13 students who have an active and eager interest in the world around them.
Never debated before? It doesn't matter! Just be sure to bring along your opinions, teamwork skills and enthusiasm with you! Whether you are an experienced debater or just curious to see what goes on, come along and get involved. You will improve your public speaking skills, make new friends and you may even get a chance to take part in the BSK debating competitions.
We meet each Monday after school from 14.30-15.30 in room 228.
