Arabic for Arabs is a compulsory curriculum provided by the Kuwait Ministry of Education, which provides the syllabi and textual resources for all Year 6-11 students of first language Arabic.
The collective rationale behind our Arabic courses lies in the vital importance of equipping students with knowledge and understanding of the Arab world in which they live. The courses contribute significantly to preparing students for effective participation in Arab society.
BSK is an English medium school, so it is vitally important that students also gain an appreciation of the Arabic language through development of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, thus enabling them to be more confident and accomplished bilinguals.
The Year 6-9 curriculum provides a firm foundation of learning. Poetry, prose and grammar are essential components of the subject, supported through regular comprehension and composition exercises, as well as weekly dictation and handwriting tests for students in Year 6-8.
Regular assessment and feedback encourage students to take control of their own progress.
First language Arabic speakers sit examinations at National level. The curriculum encompasses components such as modern and classical literature, complex components of language and grammar, research and debate. These examinations provide the prerequisite entrance to Kuwait and other Arab State universities.
Some Year 10-11 students choose to study a two-year CIE IGCSE Arabic as a First Language course. In preparation for their examinations the students develop their grammatical skills, have the opportunity to analyse modern and classic pieces of Arabic literature, complete comprehension exercises and have opportunities to present their opinions. First language speakers may also enter for Pearson Edexcel GCSE Arabic.
Other students opt to sit government examinations in Arabic at the end of Year 11. The Ministry of Education provides a version of the exam which is specifically written for students in British Curriculum schools.
