Student leadership roles are an important part of life in Year 4 as they provide opportunities for students to have a voice in what happens throughout the school as well as enabling students to develop their own leadership skills. Children are chosen to take on the roles of Playground Prefects, Sports Council Representatives and Student Council members. Student Council plays an active role in the Junior Phase at BSK. Classes each have representatives who share their groups’ concerns and bring forward suggestions for school improvement to the council. It is then up to the Student Council to take action. We are very proud of the work that our Councillors have undertaken. This year they have helped to decide on playground equipment and the types of food offered at the school canteen.
A special part of Year 4 is our Wider Opportunities music programme which has every student playing an orchestral instrument. Music lessons resound to the sound of individuals and groups playing clarinets, flutes, cellos, violins and trumpets. Children are able to showcase their musical talents to fellow students and parents during special assemblies, playing the daily National Anthem and being a member of the Development Orchestra.
As part of their French language studies students enjoy a French Café and contribute to a festival recognising the more than 70 nationalities represented within our student body. French at this stage is taught very actively through games, songs and puppets with the focus largely on speaking and listening skills.
Below are some pictures of our Development Orchestra in action each morning before school.
